Will that improve the connectivity outside? I was thinking of replacing the ethernet wired AP Express nearest my BBQ with a Wifi 6 router, hardwired to the Time Capsule. The BBQ areas is only about 30 feet from that router. The closest wired router is an Express that is hardwired to my Time Capsule, but it drops off quickly with distance (there's a fire resistant exterior wall in between). The issue is the BBQ Express does not have the best signal and I get Airplay drop offs and slow connections.

I also run a 4k projector with movies outdoors and need decent speed out there for a MacBook Pro to stream 4k movies. I also have an Airport Express connected to amplified speakers (Airplay) outside in my BBQ area (but it is wireless, since I don't have Ethernet out there). The house is wired for Ethernet, so I have several Airport Expresses (with Airplay) connected via Ethernet to the main router (TC), serving as remote outposts with speakers and Wifi coverage. It would be great if I could set it up as a Wi-Fi extender (bridge) for my BT Smarthub. Thank you.Ĭan I connect Airport Express wirelessly (for Airplay purposes) to a Wifi 6 router? I currently have an Airport Time Capsule serving as my main router creating a whole house network. In this mode it will stream from Airplay on my iPhone to the speaker - and it sounds great!īut it’s a pain having to lose the internet to do it and it doesn’t seem very stable. Nonetheless, I can make it work using Airplay by ignoring all three status messages and coming off my Wi-Fi network and joining the Airport Express network. I have set it up in what seems to be a standalone Wi-Fi network with no internet connection (the amber light keeps flashing) and there are three status messages shown in Airport Utility (Ethernet unplugged, no internet connection and no DNS server). I want to use it wirelessly if possible so I don’t have to lay an Ethernet extension cable. Still it did download the latest firmware. But I couldn’t get it to join the network (amber light flashing). I’m having trouble setting up the AirPort Express to link with my BT Smart Hub? I’ve updated the firmware by temporarily plugging it in via an Ethernet cable to my BT Smart Hub. I can, but only in what seems to be a standalone network. I have connected an old B&O speaker to my Apple AirPort Express using the audio socket in the hope that I can use Airplay to stream to the speaker. Can any of these devices help extend the wifi?Ĭan I connect my AirPort Express to my BT Smart Hub wirelessly? Hello. Also the Fire TV, and a smart thermostat. I should probably add that there is an Echo Dot in my kid's bedroom (on the weak-wifi end of the house) that is more of a radio than anything else. I'm thinking I need a wired access point but which one? The options are mind-boggling.

Since then I've tried a TP-Link powerline extender and a Galaway wireless extender, that I implemented independent of the Express, neither worked well.

We have a Spectrum cable modem connected to a Linksys AC1900 router. I got a good suggestion to split the duties, keeping the Express for Airplay and getting another device for wifi.

We have spectrum cable internet, the speeds can be up to 200 Mbps, but mostly around 50. Recently we've noticed the wifi is weak on that end of the house, and streaming on Amazon through Fire TV (wireless, and on that end of the house) is problematic as well. We use our Airport Express to extend our wifi (it's connected to our router by Ethernet cable, and at the opposite end of the house.) We also use it to Airplay music from our laptops to our stereo system. I asked this question earlier this year (seems like ages ago).
